Navigating the Twin Ports: What to Expect from the 2025 Boating Season
As spring settles into Duluth-Superior, anticipation grows for another exciting boating season on the open waters of Lake Superior, the St. Louis River, and the many scenic inland routes across the Northland. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a newcomer ready to cast off for the first time, the 2025 boating season promises a wealth of opportunities—and some important updates—to help make your time on the water safer and more enjoyable.
Here’s what local boaters can expect this year, and how the Duluth Sail & Power Squadron (DSPS) can help you navigate the season with confidence:
🚢 Increased Commercial Traffic and the Spring Shipping Season
The Twin Ports remain one of the busiest inland seaports in the U.S., with freighters, tankers, and tugs moving in and out of the harbor regularly. As always, boaters should be aware of the:
- Designated shipping channels in the harbor and bay
- Limited visibility and maneuverability of large commercial vessels
- Need to tune into VHF Channel 16 and stay clear of traffic zones near the Aerial Lift Bridge
DSPS offers navigation and safety courses designed to help boaters operate confidently in high-traffic areas.
⛵ Tall Ships Return to Duluth – July 2025
One of the biggest maritime events of the decade, the Festival of Sail – Tall Ships Duluth, returns this July. While the event will draw thousands of visitors and boats to the harbor, it also comes with safety and security protocols for all vessels:
- Temporary security zones and slow/no-wake areas will be enforced during ship arrivals and departures
- DSPS encourages local boaters to plan ahead and stay informed through Coast Guard bulletins and squadron updates
Watch for DSPS outreach on Facebook and the Channel Chatter blog for up-to-date navigation guidance.
🛟 New Safety Standards and Equipment Checks
The 2025 season brings a renewed focus on boating safety compliance, including:
- Updated fire extinguisher expiration rules
- Life jacket accessibility requirements
- Proper display of registration numbers and decals
The Duluth Sail & Power Squadron offers free Vessel Safety Checks (VSCs) to ensure you’re compliant and ready before launch. Schedule yours early this spring!
🎓 Spring & Summer Education Opportunities
DSPS continues to host a range of boating education programs for all skill levels, including:
- America’s Boating Course (ABC) for beginners
- Navigation, weather, and radar courses for advanced boaters
- Spring safety refreshers and in-person seminars
These programs are open to members and the public and provide the foundation for safer and more confident boating.
📅 Mark Your Calendar for DSPS Events
We’re excited to bring back our signature events this year:
- Captain’s Platter – June 7
- Corn Roast – Labor Day Weekend (Open to all D10 visitors!)
Events are a great way to connect with the boating community, gain insights, and have fun.
⚓ Prepare Now, Enjoy Later
From spectacular views of the Tall Ships to the calm serenity of the St. Louis River, the 2025 boating season in the Twin Ports is shaping up to be one to remember. As always, preparation is the key to safe and enjoyable boating. The Duluth Sail & Power Squadron is proud to be your partner in education, safety, and community.
