Essential Boating Safety Equipment You Should Never Leave the Dock Without
Boating on Lake Superior and the Duluth-Superior waterways is an incredible experience, but safety should always come first. Every time you set sail, it’s crucial to have the right safety gear on board to protect yourself, your passengers, and other boaters. The Duluth Sail & Power Squadron (DSPS) is dedicated to educating boaters on safety essentials and ensuring you’re prepared for any emergency.
1️⃣ Life Jackets – The #1 Safety Essential 🛟
Wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is the easiest and most effective way to prevent drowning in an emergency. Many boating fatalities happen because people weren’t wearing a properly fitted life vest.
✅ Must-have for every passenger, including pets
✅ Different types available (inflatable, foam, hybrid) for various water activities
✅ Required by law—each vessel must carry a life jacket for every person on board
💡 DSPS Safety Tip: Regularly inspect life jackets for wear and tear, and ensure children wear the right size for their weight. A life jacket that’s too big or too small won’t work properly in an emergency.
2️⃣ Fire Extinguishers – Be Ready for Onboard Fires 🔥
Boat fires are rare but can be catastrophic if you’re not prepared. Electrical malfunctions, fuel leaks, or engine issues can quickly escalate into dangerous situations.
✅ Every boat with an engine must carry a marine-rated fire extinguisher
✅ Check the expiration date & keep it easily accessible
✅ Learn how to use it—practice PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep)
💡 DSPS Safety Tip: Have your fire extinguisher inspected annually and store it in a location that’s easy to access in case of emergency.
3️⃣ Distress Signals – Help Rescuers Find You 🚨
If you find yourself in trouble on the water, having proper distress signals can save your life. Visibility is key when signaling for help, especially on Lake Superior, where conditions can change rapidly.
✅ Flares (Daytime & nighttime visibility)
✅ Horn or Whistle (Sound signals for emergencies & low visibility conditions)
✅ VHF Marine Radio (For direct communication with the Coast Guard or nearby vessels)
✅ Emergency Kit (Includes a waterproof flashlight, batteries, and first-aid supplies)
💡 DSPS Safety Tip: Store all distress signals in a waterproof container and make sure everyone onboard knows where they are and how to use them.
